About Wegovy pills

What is the Wegovy pill and how does it work?

The Wegovy pill is an oral form of semaglutide. It acts on GLP-1 receptors to slow stomach emptying and reduce appetite, just like the injection, but is taken as a daily tablet.

Can I buy it online?

Yes, via a medical review. It's a prescription-only medicine and can't be bought without one.

How long before it works?

Appetite often changes within the first few weeks. Weight loss builds gradually as the dose is increased over several months.

How do you take it

Take it on an empty stomach with no more than half a glass of water, and wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines.

Understanding side effects

Most side effects relate to digestion and occur early in treatment or after a dose increase. For most people they ease as the body adjusts.

Digestive issues

Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and indigestion are the most common effects, usually strongest in the first few weeks and after each dose increase.

Other common side effects

Headache, dizziness, tiredness and temporary hair loss linked to rapid weight loss.

Dehydration

Persistent nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration. Drink fluids regularly and tell your doctor if symptoms are severe.

Less common but serious

Gallbladder problems, pancreatitis and severe allergic reactions are rare. Seek help immediately for severe abdominal pain with vomiting.

Eligibility

The Wegovy pill supports weight management alongside healthy eating and regular exercise.

Comparing the Wegovy pill

Wegovy pill vs Wegovy injection

Same active ingredient, different delivery method. The pill is taken daily on an empty stomach; the injection is weekly and has the most evidence for weight loss.

Wegovy pill vs Mounjaro

Mounjaro is a weekly injection with dual hormone action and a higher average weight loss in studies. The pill suits people who'd rather avoid needles.

Wegovy pill vs Saxenda

Saxenda is a daily injection containing liraglutide. The Wegovy pill offers daily dosing without injecting, with semaglutide as the active ingredient.

Wegovy pill vs Foundayo

Both are once-daily oral treatments. Your doctor advises which is most suitable based on your history and tolerance.

Storage & travel

Store tablets in the original blister pack at room temperature, below 30°C, away from moisture. No refrigeration needed, which makes travel easy.

Stopping, restarting and switching

Talk to your doctor before changing your treatment.

Stopping treatment

Oral semaglutide doesn't cause physical withdrawal, but appetite often returns to pre-treatment levels and some weight regain is common.

Restarting

After a short break you can usually restart at your last tolerated dose. After a longer break you may need to restart at 3mg and build up again.

Switching to an injection

Your doctor advises the appropriate starting dose for the injection and when to use your first pen after your last tablet.

Alternatives

  • Mounjaro — weekly dual-hormone injection
  • Wegovy injection — weekly semaglutide pen
  • Foundayo — once-daily oral treatment
  • Orlistat — reduces fat absorbed from food
