About Wegovy

What is Wegovy and how does it work?

Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine containing semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a hormone released after eating, which slows stomach emptying and reduces hunger signals in the brain.

How it works

Semaglutide acts on GLP-1 receptors to reduce hunger and 'food noise', making it easier to eat less without constantly relying on willpower.

How effective is it?

In clinical studies, adults lost an average of 20.7% of their body weight over 72 weeks, alongside changes to diet and exercise.

How quickly will you see results?

Most people notice reduced appetite within the first few weeks. Weight change gradually increases as the dose is built up.

Understanding side effects

Most side effects relate to digestion and occur early in treatment or after a dose increase. For most people they're mild to moderate and ease as the body adjusts.

Digestive issues

Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, indigestion and burping are the most common effects, usually strongest in the first few weeks and after each dose increase.

Other common side effects

Headache, dizziness, tiredness, injection site reactions and temporary hair loss linked to rapid weight loss.

Dehydration

Persistent nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration. Drink fluids regularly and tell your doctor if symptoms are severe or ongoing.

Less common but serious

Gallbladder problems, pancreatitis and severe allergic reactions are rare. Seek help immediately for severe abdominal pain with vomiting.

Eligibility

Wegovy supports weight management alongside healthy eating and regular exercise. A thorough review is the best way to find the right treatment for you.

Results

What Wegovy weight loss results can look like. Individual results may vary.

What to expect over time

Most people see steady weight loss in the first year, with results maintained as long as they continue treatment alongside changes to diet and exercise.

Clinical study data

  • STEP 1: 14.9% average loss at 2.4 mg over 68 weeks
  • STEP UP: 20.7% average loss at 7.2 mg over 72 weeks
  • SELECT: reduced risk of major cardiovascular events

Head-to-head comparison

In SURMOUNT-5, semaglutide led to an average 13.7% weight loss, compared with 20.2% for tirzepatide over 72 weeks.

Body composition

Most of the weight lost comes from fat mass, but preserving muscle mass through regular exercise and adequate protein is important throughout treatment.

Mounjaro versus Wegovy at a glance

Both are weekly injections prescribed for weight loss. They work in different ways, and the right choice depends on how your body responds, not just the numbers.

You may need a letter for airport security. Contact us and your doctor will send a PDF copy to print.

Stopping, restarting and switching

Talk to your doctor before changing your treatment. A clear plan gives you the best chance of maintaining your results.

Can you stop suddenly?

Yes — semaglutide doesn't cause physical withdrawal. The medicine leaves your body within a few weeks.

What happens after stopping?

Appetite often returns to pre-treatment levels, and some weight regain is common. Our team helps with nutrition and lifestyle planning to maintain results.

Restarting Wegovy

  • Within a few weeks — restart at your last tolerated dose
  • After a longer break — you may need to restart at 0.25 mg and build up again

Switching to or from Mounjaro

  • Leave one week between your last Wegovy dose and your first Mounjaro dose, starting at 2.5mg
  • Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy also requires a one-week gap; your doctor will advise the starting dose.

Wegovy alternatives

Wegovy is one of several prescription weight loss treatments, and it isn't always the right starting point for everyone.

  • Mounjaro — tirzepatide, weekly, dual GIP and GLP-1 action
  • Saxenda — liraglutide, daily, a more gradual approach
  • Generic liraglutide — the same active ingredient at a lower price

Weight loss pills

  • Wegovy pill — prescription-only oral semaglutide
  • Foundayo — once-daily oral treatment
  • Orlistat — reduces the amount of fat absorbed from food
